What is a Feed & Expansion Tank, & where would you use one?
A Feed & Expansion tank is simply a water tank that is designed to be the cold water reservoir to feed a system below in a commercial or domestic plumbing system, that's why its also know as a "header" tank as it's at the top of the system giving the system a head of pressure. A rough rule of thumb is 0.1 Bar/100kPa per Metre vertical. The tank would be incorporated into the system with a mains water connection to the float valve which fills and replenishes the primary or secondary water depending on what type of system it's installed. The term expansion tank simply put means that the tank acts as a "cushion" in the system. When the primary or secondary water is heated in the system the water expands and in and open vented system the hot water travels up the vent/expansion pipe, this can terminate in an external discharge or back to the tank. Any excess volume in the tank is carried away by the overflow which acts as a visual tell-tale that the system is at capacity or there may be a fault like a faulty thermostat allowing the water to boil or indicate a faulty float valve for example.
A Feed and expansion tank would be used in a domestic situation to feed water to a Wet Back system, the tank would supply water to a storage tank for domestic hot water and also the Wet-Back in a wood burner stove, another common use would be for a Hydronic heating system or a simple gravity feed hot water system. In a commercial setting, the tank can be used for any manner of applications where there is a requirement for gravity open vented replenishment of water.
