Important note:
- The Universal Frost Protection Valve is not suitable for use in freeze-prone areas. In such locations, we recommend using a closed-circuit solar collector system with an approved antifreeze heat transfer fluid for proper protection.
OPERATION
- The Universal Frost Protection Valve (FPV) is designed to help safeguard solar collector panels from frost damage during low ambient temperatures. It features a temperature-sensitive, wax-filled element that responds when outside air temperatures drop.
- As the temperature falls, the element triggers the FPV valve to open, allowing warm water from the solar storage cylinder to circulate through the solar collector and exit via the FPV. This warm water flow helps reduce the risk of spot freezing, which can cause serious damage to the panel.
- As warm water passes through the valve, the internal temperature rises, prompting the FPV to automatically close and stop the flow. The valve will cycle open and closed as needed until outside air temperatures return to safe levels.
INSTALLATION
- Always refer to the solar water heater manufacturer's installation instructions alongside the guidelines provided below.
- For optimal frost protection, it is recommended to install one Frost Protection Valve per solar collector panel within the array. Please note that connection fittings can vary between manufacturers, so you may require an adaptor to ensure a proper fit.
- The Universal Frost Protection Valve is designed to connect to a 15mm (½”) male threaded fitting.
MAINTENANCE
- The Frost Protection Valve features narrow internal waterways, which may be susceptible to sludge build-up, particularly when installed on the lower connection point of a solar collector. To ensure reliable performance and prevent potential valve malfunction or damage to the solar collector, regular inspection and cleaning are recommended.
